20. Use Rechargeable Batteries
Most computer equipment runs on wall power.
Some peripherals – like wireless mice – use dry-cell batteries.
For these (and other uses), we suggest you consider using rechargeable batteries. Why?
On average, each person in the United States discards eight dry-cell batteries per year (source: US EPA).

Rechargeable Battery Benefits
There are several rechargeable battery benefits.
First, they are more economical than disposable batteries.
There is an initial cost for a battery charger.
Plus rechargeable batteries cost quite a bit more than "disposable" batteries.
Because they can be reused, however, rechargeable batteries are more cost effective.
A second important benefit is environmental.
Your use of rechargeable batteries reduces the amount of heavy metals that are sent to landfills.
According to the US-EPA, Americans purchase over 3 billion disposable batteries each year.
Your involvement can help reduce that number, and the associated waste it creates.
How Much Do You Save?
First consider disposable batteries.
Online, we found a four-pack of AA alkaline batteries for $6.00.
Next consider the cost of a charger and four AA rechargeable NiMH batteries.
Although there are better prices available, the suggested retail price for a Rayovac Universal Batter Charger is about $27.
The suggested retail price of four rechargeable batteries is around $18. Total investment: $45.00.
Getting to the "total cost", five-hundred sets of disposable AA alkaline batteries is $3000.00 ($6 times 500).
One set of rechargeable batteries (including charger) is $45.00.
(Rechargeable NiMH batteries can be recharged up to 1,000 times, but we cut this in half and count only 500 uses.)
Net savings with rechargeable batteries for 500 Uses: $2,955.00
