17. When Printing, Recycle Paper Afterwards
Quite a lot of paper gets put into landfills. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, 40% of the material
that goes into landfills is made up of paper. But that is okay, right? Paper is bio-degradeable after all.
Paper In Landfills
Does it make a difference whether you throw paper out with the trash versus recycling it? Paper is biodegradeable, but when it does degrade it generates methane. Methane is a Greenhouse Gas
that is ten times worse than Carbon Dioxide in terms of its impact on the ozone. It also takes up space, and landfills are filling up fast.

A better alternative is to sort your waste material. Send as much paper as you can to be recycled. Used paper can be cleaned and re-used as recycled-paper, and that takes fewer resources -- energy and water -- than what is required to create new paper.
