11. Dispose of Batteries Properly
There are many different types of batteries used in today’s electronics.
Make sure that you dispose of them properly.
Many people throw batteries into the garbage, but there are heavy metals in some kind of batteries and those need to be disposed of properly.
Notebook Batteries
Most notebook computers have rechargeable lithium-ion batteries.
These last a long time, but they don’t last forever.
When you buy a new laptop battery, your battery provider should accept the old battery for proper recycling.
You should be able to send your old battery back to the provider in the same box that your new battery came in.
If your battery provider does not support this service, find another one that does!

UPS Lead-Acid Batteries
The batteries inside an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) are typically sealed lead-acid batteries. This is like the battery that you have in your car. While these are rechargeable, they do wear out and need to be replaced from time to time. When they do, your battery provider should accept the used battery for proper disposal.

Other Kinds of Batteries
There are still other types of batteries to consider, including "disposable" alkaline batteries like those used in many electronic devices.
We suggest you talk to your local waste disposal company for details on the programs they have available for proper disposal of batteries.
