7. Automate Power Management
Also referred to as "PC Power Management", an automated computer power management solution can simplify
and centralize power management for large number (more than 500) of computer systems.
Home and Small Business users can normally enable power management settings for individual computers.
In our survey of available software solutions, we found three basic categories.
We are in the process of testing the products in the first two categories and plan to
make our results available.
Organized from most-to-least sophisticated, the three categories are as follows:
(1) Dedicated solutions, (2) Non-Dedicated solutions, and (3) Home and Home Office solutions.
7.1 Dedicated Power Management Solutions
These dedicated solutions are from vendors who specialize in power management. All of them provide
centralized control over a fleet of network-connected systems. When you need the most control over all aspects of
workstation power management, you want to consider one of these packages.

7.2 Non-Dedicated Power Management Solutions
These "Desktop Management Solutions" have a few power management features, but typically do not provide
all the options in even the most basic dedicated power management solution.

7.3 Home and Home Office solutions
These utilities are oriented towards the home or home-office user. In other words, you want to find
a solution that does not require an information technology (IT) department to support it.
These can be used to automate the shutdown and/or startup of individual machines. However, they do not
provide centralized power management features that are key elements in the first two categories.
