4. Consider the EPEAT Rating When Buying
If you like what the Energy Star rankings tell you, then you will be thrilled with what you learn from the Energy Products Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT). Sponsored by the Green Electronics Council (www.greenelectronicscouncil.org), you can find details on the EPEAT website for computer products which meets their criteria.

Environmental Assessment Tool
The EPEAT assessment tool goes beyond energy consumption and performance. In fact, one of the criteria for EPEAT is that a product already be Energy-Star certified. EPEAT also relies on another government assessment, namely the European directive that restricts the use of hazardous substances (RoHS, which stands for “Restriction on the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment”).

Also among the EPEAT criteria are the elimination of heavy metals in a product, and the selection of materials which can be recycled. In addition to product-specific requirements, EPEAT addresses product longevity and all manufacturers must provide a three year warranty. EPEAT also touches on issues that surround a product aside from the product itself. This includes things like the use of the packaging material for a product.
Corporate Environmental Responsibility
The EPEAT criteria also address corporate behavior, in that those participating manufacturers must make an annual report on their environmental policies. Details at http://www.epeat.net.
